Things to do in Auckland


In the city centre pay a visit to the Art Gallery, the Town Hall, the Force Entertainment centre. The waterfront is beautiful and entire volcanic cones had to be removed to reclaim this part of town. The Viaduct Harbour is now one of the most spectacular attractions of the city and was a perfect backdrop to the Americas Cup Regatta and other attractions.

The Maritime Museum and the Waitemata Plaza as well as the Ferry building are all placed around here. Grafton is where the Auckland Hospital is located as well as the Domain, the massive park with its duck ponds and sports fields, and the Winter gardens. From here you can take a stroll up to the summit of Mt. Eden where you will be rewarded with a beautiful view of the city. One Tree Hill also has fine views and is where the Star Dome Planetarium is located. East of the city is Tamaka Drive, which is the Riviera part of Auckland, offering up crescent shaped beaches that stretch for miles along the coast.

There is also Kelly Tarltons Underwater World and the Antarctic Encounter which are very popular. Around Manukau is the Rainbows End Theme Park which the children will love. West of Auckland and about an hours drive, one can reach beautiful black sand surf beaches, lots of bush walks, as well as many horse riding opportunities. With many wineries to visit, and Hunting lodges to dine in, you could be persuaded to make a tour west as part of your stay in New Zealand. For the shopping enthusiast, the Central business district is located around Queen Street and has lots of retail outlets.

The fashion district is located around High Street, where one can acquire a few designer labels. Out in the suburbs is Newmarket which is also a fashion district with lots of luxury shops selling clothes and jewellery. Manukau has over 50 different ethnic communities and has lots of markets, festivals and a great variety of shopping which also includes the Otara Market. The North Shore which lies across the Harbour Bridge is great for beautiful beaches and also has some fine shopping centres and restaurants.
