In the city centre pay a visit to the Art Gallery, the Town Hall,
the Force Entertainment centre. The waterfront is beautiful and entire volcanic
cones had to be removed to reclaim this part of town. The Viaduct Harbour is
now one of the most spectacular attractions of the city and was a perfect backdrop
to the Americas Cup Regatta and other attractions.
The Maritime Museum and the Waitemata Plaza as well as the Ferry
building are all placed around here. Grafton is where the Auckland Hospital
is located as well as the Domain, the massive park with its duck ponds and sports
fields, and the Winter gardens. From here you can take a stroll up to the summit
of Mt. Eden where you will be rewarded with a beautiful view of the city. One
Tree Hill also has fine views and is where the Star Dome Planetarium is located.
East of the city is Tamaka Drive, which is the Riviera part of Auckland, offering
up crescent shaped beaches that stretch for miles along the coast.
There is also Kelly Tarltons Underwater World and the Antarctic
Encounter which are very popular. Around Manukau is the Rainbows End Theme Park
which the children will love. West of Auckland and about an hours drive, one
can reach beautiful black sand surf beaches, lots of bush walks, as well as
many horse riding opportunities. With many wineries to visit, and Hunting lodges
to dine in, you could be persuaded to make a tour west as part of your stay
in New Zealand. For the shopping enthusiast, the Central business district is
located around Queen Street and has lots of retail outlets.
The fashion district is located around High Street, where one
can acquire a few designer labels. Out in the suburbs is Newmarket which is
also a fashion district with lots of luxury shops selling clothes and jewellery.
Manukau has over 50 different ethnic communities and has lots of markets, festivals
and a great variety of shopping which also includes the Otara Market. The North
Shore which lies across the Harbour Bridge is great for beautiful beaches and
also has some fine shopping centres and restaurants.
